At the age of 21, Yogi left his house and was actively associated with the Ram Mandir movement in the 90s.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Yogi won by a margin of 42,309 votes.

He met Avidyanath, the Mahant of Gorakhnath temple in Rishikesh, who later became his disciple and settled in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh in 1994 at the age of 22. He was later renamed Yogi Adityanath from Ajay.
Yogi is the founder of Hindu Yuva Vahini. It is a group of social, cultural and nationalist youth and is very popular among the Hindus of eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Despite his prominence in the party, he never made good relations with the BJP. He has been with the party for over a decade. BJP and Yogi clash in 2007 UP elections
Yogi’s political journey started in 1996, when he was in charge of Mahant Avidyanath’s election campaign.
In March 2010, Adityanath did not follow the party whip on the Women’s Reservation Bill.
He was elected as MP to the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998 from Gorakhpur constituency. He is the youngest member of the Lok Sabha. He has been the MP of the same constituency till now.
Yogi is a fond animal lover.
On 19 March 2017, he has sworn as the 21st Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
